Organizing Xicano Diasporas

This course (openly accessible online) is designed as an exploration of, as well as an intervention into, the community organizing and diasporas of Xicano communities. Participants will engage decolonial perspectives on systems of power, Indigenous sovereignty, autonomy, liberation, and self-determination. In particular, the course highlights the experiences of Indígena communities in Mexico and the diaspora of Xicano communities in the US. Some content also includes selected histories of imperialism and resistance in Central America, the Caribbean, and amongst radical Black and Anishinaabe organizers in the US. This work is intended to help us deepen our understanding of who Xicanos are and to present us with decolonial models of resistance to draw from so that we may be better positioned in our organizing efforts moving forward.

The syllabus for the course can be found here, and it contains links to all of the open access materials referenced. The mural on this page was created by Mario Mena, who came to Battle Creek in 2025 to complete the work.
